It’s time! Some of us have the kids are going to back to school blues, and some of us are secretly jumping for joy-or if you’re like me it changes every hour :). I always miss the lazy mornings of summer the most, but then getting back into a routine is always a little refreshing too. I’ll just repeat that ten times until it sinks in!
The one thing I dread the most with approaching school year is all the paper work that comes home. I only had one child in school last year, and I couldn’t believe all that we’d pull out of his back pack every day. And this year I have two! If I were super organized I am sure it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but I always end up scrambling looking for this note or that with reminders and dates in the rush if the morning, certain I have forgot something.
So when our Michaels Makers Challenge this month was to make the school year more organized, I knew exactly the mess I wanted to tackle! It’s super simple, and I think the kids can do it on their own-so it’s perfect!
Catch me after the jump for all the details!
I made a simple station that I can hang on the wall next to where the kids will keep their backpacks. It’s a framed chalkboard I picked up at Michaels. Then I used some of those awesome big clothes pins from their new Raw Bar line for them to clip stuff too. I also grabbed some metal initials from the Raw Bar line so the kids would know which clip was theirs. So simple folks! It looks great too.
So here’s my vision: kids come home from school and they empty their back packs, each clipping the paperwork and homework to the board using their initial. Then when I have a chance, I can look through them, write any important things to remember on the board and save the paper for all the details. Then as the date expires I can just toss them. This way I have all the papers where I can easily find them. Sound good? Now here’s how to make one.
- framed chalk board (mine is 20 in x 20 in)
- giant clips or something similar
- initials (you could even paint them on the clips)
- chalk board pen
- hot glue
Glue the initials to the clips using the hot glue. Then glue the clips to the board so that they allow the papers to be hung, and still leave a little room at the top for writing important dates and stuff.
That’s it! Hang that bad boy up and you’re a little more prepared for the new school year :).
If you have more than two kiddos in school you could buy the chalk board on a roll that Michaels has and make a longer station with the clips.
