I know I’ve mentioned in multiple previous posts – 12 Creative Ways To Use Buttons For Crafting Projects, that I just love those bags of craft buttons that are ubiquitous to all craft stores. Examining each of the bags and trying to see which one has that button or buttons that you just cannot leave the store without! But then what to do with them? Often there’s only one of the most special ones in the bag, or even if there are multiples, you know they wouldn’t stand up to going through the wash too often.
I made that mistake with an adorable vest I made for my daughter, I put some of those cute little wooden flower buttons on it that had a flower print on each button, well of course after the first wash the flower print was off the buttons, but at least they were still flower shaped. Well, I’ve been scouring the internet for ten button crafts that I cannot wait try my hand at! Now I have go find some E6000, I know they sell it in the U.S., but do they even sell that in Australia? Ha! I checked and they do!
Button Magnets!
Okay so I have been in need of new fridge magnets for AGES! But I wanted something special, not just the boring ones that I was able to find locally, nor did I want to spend a ton on custom ones from Etsy. They’re worth the money, don’t get me wrong, I just find it intensely difficult to spend money on something I could do myself, it’s the craft goblin in me. Anyway, the idea of button magnets somehow hadn’t occurred to me until I saw this tutorial, and I cannot wait to go get some magnets and make these! My fridge is going to be so pretty and cute!!! Especially because my fridge magnets almost exclusively hold adorable pictures of food-related cats made by my daughter!
Spring Bouquet
This is such a charming craft! I love having flowers in the house but hate that they die so quickly. I personally wouldn’t display them in a soft-drink can but there’s this tiny yellow vase at my local op-shop that has been there for months, and I’ve picked it up multiple times but then thought when am I going to use this? Now! Now is when I’m going to use this! Next time my op-shop is open I’m getting that cute little vase and my daughter and I are going to make cute little button flowers! Also, if you didn’t have pre-cut felt pieces it would be easy to cut them yourself from felt scraps.
Button Bookmarks
Oh, how sweet are these button bookmarks! My husband and I have always read a lot, and now our daughter does too! We mostly read from our Kindles or phones, but sometimes physical books, and it’s the sometimes that’s the issue. Because we don’t read physical books all the time, we no longer seem to have any bookmarks! These are just too cute and could also be really helpful for textbooks where you want to bookmark multiple spots in the one book. I personally would opt for the E6000 over hot glue because I find that hot glue has a tendency to come off when pressure is applied once it’s cold.
DIY Embellished Button Shoes for Girls
Ummm, this is darling! I love zhuzhing up my daughter’s things, her school hats always get some pretty embellishments and my favourite shoe brand is Irregular Choice which are ALL about embellishments, so for me this is a no-brainer. I would totally do this to my own shoes, too, to be honest. Maybe a slight variation, but yeah, this is happening! Oh! I could glue this sort of cute embellishment onto my daughter’s gumboots!
Button Bobby Pins
How annoying is it when you buy some embellished bobby pins, but the little charms go the same way? Like two cute little clouds with faces, but they are glued on so that they can only be used on the right side of your head or the little cloud will be upside-down? This simple little craft puts an end to that, and allows you to be sure the embellishment is on a high-quality bobby pin that won’t damage your hair.
Button Thumbtacks
Very similar concept here to the button magnets and I am so here for these as well. I’ve added the required thumbtacks to my shopping cart and I can’t wait to make and use some of these! I think I’m going to get a corkboard and everything!
Button Cluster Keyring
I’ve made a bit of jewellery in my time, and stitch markers for my knitting, so I already have the supplies to make these. But even if you don’t, you can pick up little jewellery making kits for pretty cheap, and you’d be shocked once you have them how often you use them. My keyring is in definite need of a little sprucing up!
Vibrant Button Tree on Canvas
I love having trees in various forms as wall art. Along with my love of (addiction to?) buttons, I really cannot wait to make one of these. This might just be the perfect excuse to get another couple of those little assorted button bags!
Button Tree Lampshade
Oh! This could go with the tree canvas! My daughter’s room needs a lamp, actually, for her desk. I’m getting really excited to have a go at this and make my daughter’s room some new adorable, and coordinated, décor!
Embroidered Button Flower Bag
A long time ago, a very pregnant me was feeling nasty, and I made a pretty little decorative embroidery hoop with some very simple button flowers with embroidered stems. It still hangs in my daughter’s room to this day. This adorable little bag is very similar, but takes what I made a step further and frankly now I need one. I wanted a little bag for my phone, actually, this is the perfect excuse to get the buttons out again.
So now you have ten enchanting button crafts lined up! Many of these could be done on the same day as they’re very easy and not time intensive – you could make a button craft weekend! Also, many of these activities are perfectly kid friendly so you and the kids could get into the buttons. I think we’re going to need more buttons! *Waggles crafty fingers happily*
