How to DIY Fairy Dish Garden
1. Clean the Terracotta Pot
Since I will repurpose a broken terracotta pot, it is dirty and needs a good cleaning. I scrubbed it first before painting it. I only clean the outer part of the pot since the inside will be filled with garden soil.
2. Paint the Terracotta Pot
Paint the pot with your desired color, ensuring you use a paint suitable for cement. There’s no need to apply a primer, as we’re creating a budget-friendly DIY fairy dish garden.
3. Paint the fairy house
Lucky me, I found my fairy house on the street while walking my dog. I decided to pick it up, knowing that a little love can do wonders for this little fairy house. I scrubbed the house to clean it and then painted it. I used old make up brush to draw small details in the fairy house.

5. Water the soil to loosen the soil
Water the soil a bit to loosen it for easier planting.
6. Plant your chosen plants to put in your dish garden
Plant your plant in both sides and leave the center empty because the fairy house will be placed in the center of the pot.
Choose your plant carefully for your fairy dish garden. First, determine where you plan to display your dish garden: will it be in direct sunlight, indoors, or in a bright area? This will help you know which type of plant you can use. Also, consider the care required for the plants. Will it be easy, low-maintenance, or will it require significant effort to care for them?
Bonus Tip: You need to know if the plant you chose will grow rapidly. Over time, the plant will eventually grow, and you must visualize whether its growth will ruin your dish garden setup or if you can maintain the setup with the plant you selected for your fairy dish garden. If you are a beginner in plant care, do a little research.
7. Place the fake moss on top of the soil
Place the fake grass moss in the soil. This will help prevent weeds from growing in your dish garden, and it also looks great in your dish garden setup.
8. Place your fairy house in the center of your pot.
Place your fairy house in the center of your dish garden. If you want to go the extra mile, you can add a battery-operated LED candle inside the fairy house to enhance its beauty at night.
9. Add your miniatures
Here’s the fun part: decorating your fairy dish garden! Add your miniatures and consider a theme for your dish garden. You could go for a fairy theme, dwarfs with Snow White, or if you enjoy anime, opt for a Ghibli theme. There are so many miniatures to choose from on Amazon.

Care for your DIY Fairy Dish Garden
Water your plants according to their specific needs. Water only the plants, not the entire dish garden. Using a watering can with a long neck and no sprinkler helps water the plants directly. Add fertilizer as needed once a month. If your plant is growing, trim it to prevent cluttering your dish garden setup. Occasionally wash your miniatures to keep them looking brand new and clean.
