Free Christmas Sewing Patterns

I love the Christmas season! December just feels like a magical time, where the emphasis of life turns towards our homes and families, towards being kinder to one another, and to joyfulness. I love holiday sewing, too, so I’ve collected ten free sewing patterns that I hope will bring you some joy this holiday season.

Festive Giant Candy Cane Pillow

I’m not one of those people who changes their home décor with every season, I pretty much surround myself with what brings me joy regardless of the what time of year it is. So, this pillow might look weird on my couch, because once I’ve made it, it will continue to live on my couch way past December! I love oversized things (and miniaturised things) so this candy cane pillow speaks to my whimsy loving heart!

Gnome Mini Quilt Block

I don’t actually quilt. I think I’ve made one piece-quilt inspired thing (a bespoke table-cloth for a side table) and whilst it came out cute, the process was filled with issues to be fixed along the way. As a sewing enthusiast, though, I want to quilt. I want to make lovely unique quilts for my home, and this little gnome quilt is one of the patterns that makes me want to quilt.

Okay this is so cute! My daughter is probably a little old for this as something to play with, maybe, but it’s such a lovely Christmas project that I might end up making it anyway! It’d be great for little ones to play with, I think, or purely decorative. I’d consider doing clear windows or open windows, though.

Christmas Tree Holiday Pot Holder

I think these Christmas tree pot holders are so darn cute! I love that there are two variants so you can choose what sort of pot holder you’d like to make or use. I think these would make great gifts, too! Also, if you cannot get heat resistant interfacing, multiple layers of cotton fabric or better yet wool fabric will work great here.

Adorable Mini Christmas Stocking

These fat little stockings are cute enough to give me cute aggression. I just love the wider, shorter dimensions of them and think they’d be great for kids’ Christmas chocolates or lollies (candy). I don’t know if it’s a thing overseas or not, but here kids frequently get a stocking-shaped plastic sack of chocolate bars or lollies as part of their Christmas haul, but because they’re pre-packaged, they can feel a little random and will often have at least one item that doesn’t appeal to the recipient. I love the idea of making a personalised version!

I know, I know, two mini stockings in my pattern list? But these ones are perfect for an advent calendar or to hang on the tree, whereas the other was more for stuffing full of delicious Christmas treats or small gifts. My nana once knit tiny little Christmas stockings for my brother and I that could just fit a single roll of Life Savers and hung them on her Christmas tree for us. I loved them and these mini stockings put me in mind of those little knitted ones.

Christmas Gnome Ornament

I don’t know what it is about Christmas gnomes but they speak to me; I find them adorable. These little ornaments are so simple and fun, and a great way to use up some pretty small scraps of fabric. Just adorable! I want SO MANY of these!

Christmas Plush Sewing Pattern

This pattern is actually a collection of patterns, for both a large plush and for smaller, ornament sized, animal toys. I think these are absolutely charming, and the tutorial is really clear and in depth. Really impressive stuff for a free pattern! I think a little menagerie would make for a fun and unique Christmas tree decoration theme.

DIY Fabric Christmas Bucket

This might feel a little meh as a holiday sewing pattern, but hear me out. Not only could you use it as a gift bag for a present, with a little tissue paper or what have you, but then after, it become storage for what was gifted in the bucket! For example, we have been getting our daughter LEGO as a gift somewhat regularly since she was about four or five, this would have been the perfect way to give it to her so she knows exactly where to put the LEGO after play time! I think most parents can agree, you can never have too much storage!

Santa Hat

Of course I’m going to wrap up this list with a Santa hat! What I love about this one is how simple it is, yet how easily customised. I also love her suggestion of upcycling the faux fur from a pillowcase bought from an op shop! If you were going to wear this one in cold climates you might want to line it, depending on the weight of your red fabric. It’s sweltering here in Australia right now, so I’d go for a light fabric, but that’s the beauty of making these things for ourselves, we can customise it to what we want and need. Personally, I’m feeling a festive witch hat with a wide brim, this year, because what I need is shade!

Show Some Love This Holiday Season Through Sewing!

It’s kind of rough this year. Many of us are feeling increasingly stressed about the cost-of-living crisis and the pressure to make the holidays special for our loved ones feels just that extra bit more intense this year because of it. I find sewing really helps me to find my centre and calm my mind when it’s getting caught up in what ultimately isn’t that important. Because what’s important about the holiday season isn’t how many gifts we give, how many activities we go and do, or how much seasonal food we eat, but the love that we show to those around us and letting ourselves feel hopeful and light! Happy sewing, friends, and happy holidays!
