It’s officially Spring here in Australia, and though I’m a Winter loving woman, I must say when I smell Spring on the air, I do feel a sense of anticipation! Not only because my birthday is in early Spring, but because I enjoy seeing and smelling all the flowers wake up again, the increased rain, and the days that are comfortably warm but the wind is still cool. It’s a lovely time of year, and the perfect time for some fairy crafts! I’ve been into fairy lore for a very long time, and my daughter is also a fan, so I put together a list of crafts she would like to do. She’s big into imaginative play, and playing in the yard, building things, digging up rocks, etc, so I wanted to find crafts that she could get a lot of use out of when playing in our backyard, and I bet your little ones would love these, too.

Make a Fairy Door from Popsicle Sticks

I had to start off with this fabulous fairy door! The effect is so striking, and whilst at first glance it might seem tricky, going through the steps you can see it’s actually pretty darn accessible! I can’t wait to go find some lovely little pebbles at our local lake to go around our door. I kind of want a lot of these around my house and yard! Little kids would need help with this one, but I think most kids seven and up could do this, with supervision.

Easy Painted Fairy Houses

These are very cute and I can see them being a huge hit in the sandpit! My daughter loves playing in the sandpit and making houses for bugs, these would make her SO happy to make and play with! You could also make these with plastic pots instead of the terracotta ones and you could then cut out the little front doors with a craft knife.

Painted Rock Fairy Houses

You know I love to paint rocks! I’ve made a tutorial here with rock painting with supportive messages, and I think not only would kids love to paint and play with these in the garden, I think they’d also love to paint and hide them for other kids to find and keep. That way you get to paint more and more of them! My daughter and I are going to have to hunt for a lot of rocks for our fairy crafts.

Walnut Fairy Houses

In case getting a hold of a bunch of smooth rocks isn’t in the offing for you, these walnut houses are also great! My daughter loves playing with my polymer clay and I think the whole process of these would be really appealing to kids. They’re really cute and very fun and would be a great toy for both indoor or outdoor play.

Rainbow Fairies

I think these fairies are just so darn cute! I love the combination of materials and I think it’s a great launchpad for other similar crafts. We have a heap of chunky wooden beads and now I have to find cute pinecones or similar to paint and glue them to. You could also cut out craft paper wings if you didn’t have the little leaves to hand, or felt as the tutorial suggests.

Shimmering Fairy Wand

My daughter has a ton of lovely sequins. We have this big plastic organiser for them (though they’re honestly just stuffed in there!) and she uses them for crafts all the time. Also, who doesn’t love to go and find a good stick! I think this craft would be a huge hit with kids. Each wand would be totally unique, and I think this could be a fantastic birthday party craft!

Homemade Twirling Ribbon Sticks

Ribbon is one of those things that I always keep an eye out for in the op shop, it’s almost ubiquitously there, and almost always super inexpensive. With this craft in mind, you could hit up a few op shops and probably have a pretty extensive ribbon haul, because I think this craft would also be a huge hit at a party. Who doesn’t love to swirl around pretty ribbons!

Fairy Wing Craft

For Christmas last year I made my daughter a set of beautiful sewn wings from a fantastic pattern by the fabulous Twig + Tale, but it was by no means an easy project and wouldn’t be beginner friendly. These wings, however, are far more accessible, and older kids could probably even make them themselves. I could also see this being great for a class to do if they all needed wings for a performance or some such.

Fairy Soup Backyard Sensory Activity

This is the sort of activity core-memories are made of. I bet my daughter, who is nearly ten, would still love this activity! This looks like so much fun, and great to play with on a hot day. I could also see a lot of imaginative play sparking out of this one. Personally, I would skip adding the glitter and opt for big sparkly beads or something that will add the effect, but can be kept and reused, and not pour out glitter into the garden.

Tissue Paper Flower Fairy Lights

My daughter has LED lights strung up on her canopy bed that have little paper lanterns on them. However, two playful cats in the house means that many of those lanterns have seen better days! I’ve been meaning to swap the lanterns out for something not cat-obliterated, and these charming flowers are just the thing. They’re also simple enough that most school-aged kids could make these themselves, with supervision of course.

Fairy bread is an Australian staple! Pretty much all kids’ birthday parties will have a plate of fairy bread, and most kids will get the occasional lunch of fairy bread, too. It’s buttered soft white bread with sprinkles on top, what’s not to love! Absolutely perfect for a fairy picnic, too. The bottom of this page has a link to a bunch of other Australian kids’ party food classics, they’re all fantastic and you should treat yourself to them. Also, it may be sacrilegious, but I personally always make my fairy bread with margarine, not butter.

Sprinkle Sticks

This is a fun variation of fairy bread and one that would be super quick and easy to make. They look delicious and I can see them being a big hit at a party or picnic! I can envision a lot of variations on these, too, where you could use different sprinkles according to different holidays or events.

 Fairy Potion Summer Fruit Drink

All that playing and wand waving is not only going to work up an appetite but a thirst! My daughter loves to make special drinks, and these fairy potions are something she’d go nuts for! I’d swap the stainless-steel straws for silicone ones as they’re safer, and I’d probably offer a wider variety of fruits for little ones to make their own fairy potion flavour combos with.
