One day, my son came home excited about his mosaic paper art craft project for his art class. I wasn’t sure what to do, but it turned out to be such a fun afternoon together. We gathered the necessary materials and started working on his project, and before I knew it, he was completely focused and loving every minute of arranging the tiny pieces into a face mosaic paper art.

It was simple, fun, and a great way for your kids to practice creativity and patience. If your kids have a similar assignment or project in school, or you just need an easy crafty activity at home for the whole family, this mosaic paper art craft is definitely one they’ll enjoy!

Materials Needed:

• Colored paper
• Bond paper
• Scissor
• Glue stick or liquid glue from Elmer’s
• Pencil
• Paintbrush

Steps On How To Make A  Mosaic Paper Art Craft For Kids

Step 1: Cut Colored Paper Into Small Pieces

Cut your paper in any shape you like; it can be in squares, triangles, rectangles, or strips. The pieces don’t need to be the same size. Play around with your paper cuts for your mosaic tile. Cut a smaller one too to fit into tight corners.

Step 1 - Cut Colored Paper Into Small Pieces

Tip: Sort your shapes by color and place them into small piles or cups. This makes it much easier to grab the color you need.

Step 2: Draw An Outline For Your Mosaic

My son chose a face to draw for his mosaic paper art craft.  Using a pencil, lightly draw a face on a blank paper.

Step 2 Draw An Outline For Your Mosaic

Of course, you can draw anything you want as your guideline for your mosaic paper art craft. It can be a butterfly, a dog, a cat, a house, or an apple.

Step 3: Gluing The Cut-Out Colored Paper Pieces

You can use a glue stick or liquid glue to glue the cut-out paper. For kids, it’s safe to use Elmer’s. It’s easier to apply the glue directly to the paper, but work on a small section at a time, as the glue dries too fast.

If you use liquid glue or white glue, apply it with a paintbrush. This makes it a little less messy while working on your mosaic tile. You can also use the handle of the paintbrush to stick your cut-out paper to the canvas.

If you use the glue stick, you can use the pencil’s eraser to stick the cut-out paper to build on your mosaic tile.

Step 3 Gluing The Cut-Out Colored Paper Pieces

Start sticking the cut-out paper in the outline, and slowly work on the rest of the drawing by filling it with your cut-out paper. Leave a small gap between each cut-out paper.

Step 4: Final Retouch Of The Mosaic Paper Art Craft

Double-check your mosaic and see if there’s a gap that you need to fill in with a smaller piece of paper. You can also add more pieces to enhance your mosaic paper art craft outside your outline. My son drew a face, and then he decided to add hair to his face mosaic project.

OPTIONAL: You may consider filling in the background. Use a contrasting color to your background to make your work stand out.

Step 5: Let It Dry

One last step, let it air dry. Once dried, you can display your mosaic paper art masterpiece.

And just like that, our little mosaic paper art craft is all finished! I love how something so simple turned into a colorful paper art. My kiddo is already so proud of it. We decided to pop it in a frame, and now it’s sitting happily on the shelf in the living room (though I’m pretty sure it’ll make its way to the hallway or even the bedroom soon!). The best part? Every time we walk by, it’s a sweet reminder of a fun afternoon spent cutting, gluing, and giggling together.
